Help me study: The Complex Discovery Plot
According to Noel Carroll’s “Philosophy of Horror”, the plot structure has 4 essential movements or functions:
- Onset: Monster’s presence is established for audience. Ex. shark attack in Jaws.
- Discovery: After monster arrives, an individual or group learns of its existence. Information might be treated skeptically by third parties (ie government, police, scientists). Ex. mayor of Jaws
- Confirmation: Discoverers or believers in existence of monster convince some other group about the creature and the mortal danger at hand.
- Confrontation: Humanity confronts monster in huge debacle.
There can be elminations: sequels are good examples of onset, confirmation, confrontation. Alien is a good example of onset/confrontation.
