"I love Los Angeles. I know a lot of people go there and they see just a huge sprawl of sameness. But when you’re there for a while, you realize that each section has its own mood. The golden age of cinema is still alive there, in the smell of jasmine at night and the beautiful weather. And the light is inspiring and energizing. Even with smog, there’s something about that light that’s not harsh, but bright and smooth. It fills me with the feeling that all possibilites are available. I don’t know why. It’s different from the light in other places. The light in Philadelphia, even in the summer, is not nearly as bright. It was the light that brought everybody to L.A. to make films in the early days. It’s still a beautiful place."

Quite possibly the best Christmas present I ever got myself. There’s one more performance this Sunday!
My favorites of tonight: Bernard Herrmann’s North by Northwest overture; Henry Mancini’s Charade, and John Williams’ Superman suite.

An excerpt of The Bill Trilogy, pt. 1: “Everything Will Be Okay”

At the young age of 35, the Oscar-nominated Don Hertzfeldt has amassed a body a of work unparalleled in modern animation. His meticulously crafted hand-drawn and -animated shorts continue to amaze and inspire audiences globally, and on Dec. 1st, Hertzfeldt will be in-person at the Cinefamily to introduce the L.A. premiere of his latest short, It’s Such A Beautiful Day. His longest and most ambitious piece to date, the 23-minute conclusion to his “Bill Trilogy” has been nearly two years in the making — blending traditional animation, experimental optical effects, trick photography, and new digital hyrbids printed out one frame at a time, captured entirely on an antique 35mm animation stand (one of the last remaining cameras of its kind left in America!)

Los Angeles for Beginners: Mike Mills highlights his shooting locations.
Cosmopolitan Book Shop, 7017 Melrose Ave and Counterpoint Records & Books, 5911 Franklin Ave.
Mike Mills: We shot in two really amazing bookstores. One is Counterpoint Records & Books on Franklin, and one is Cosmopolitan Books on Melrose and La Brea. Cosmopolitan is like this towering mess. So we went in there and didn’t touch it. And the guy who owns the books store is in the film. I love that. Counterpoint is gorgeous and a little more organized –– great place to get old vinyl there and used books. I go to these places all the time so it was fun to shoot in them.

*I had to mute the audio. I’d suggest some Jakob or Eluvium in lieu of Sugarcult.

Some notes according to the Youtube poster: It’s a 30 minute approach compressed into 3 or so minutes and probably what it would look like if “you were riding on the back of a cruise missile”.

"L.A. represents opportunity. And, as has been proven over and over in the current media landscape, it doesn’t take much for them to put you on TV. If that’s all you want, you can be on ‘The Bachelor’ or ‘The Real Housewives’ or whatever show just wants oversized personalities, ridiculous behavior, and zero dignity. If you just want to be famous… that’s not that much different than porn. ‘I’m a movie star!’ Well, no, you’re not. You’re a porn star, and that’s completely different. And you know, hey, mazel tov - porn probably built half the houses out here, but you’re selling your dignity in a way that I feel I’m not. And once you sell it, it’s gone. You ain’t getting it back."
